Less clutter [01 Jul 2009|03:13pm]
You guys, I'm jacking it in on LiveJournal. Between Twitter, Facebook and Bulldrek I have enough places to talk to strangers, acquaintances and friends respectively. I've noticed that many people have started doing the same, which makes reading my flist mostly a scrolling exercise and LJ has become just another place to check. That's not worth it to me. I'll subscribe to RSS feeds for people who still update and catch you that way.

Talk later!

Hai! [18 May 2009|02:00pm]
A question for experienced LJ users: I'm looking for an LJ client that allows me to change the privacy settings on individual entries made in the past. Ideally I would load n years of LJ posts into it and then review them one by one to edit the privacy settings. Any suggestions?

Liefde van J.C. Bloem [25 Apr 2009|02:10pm]
Kon ik één gaaf der jeugd terugverkrijgen,
Ik vroeg de makkelijke ontroerbaarheid
Van 't hart, dat nog niet heeft geleerd te zwijgen,
Maar vrijelijk bij de breuk der dromen schreit.

Nu ben ook ik gewend, mij te gewennen;

Brain Rules [15 Apr 2009|04:53pm]
Reading about the very interesting Brain Rules, with tons of free content (not just a link to Amazon). These are the rules:

EXERCISE | Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power.
SURVIVAL | Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too.
WIRING | Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently.
ATTENTION | Rule #4: We don't pay attention to boring things.
SHORT-TERM MEMORY | Rule #5: Repeat to remember.
LONG-TERM MEMORY | Rule #6: Remember to repeat.
SLEEP | Rule #7: Sleep well, think well.
STRESS | Rule #8: Stressed brains don't learn the same way.
SENSORY INTEGRATION | Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses.
VISION | Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses.
GENDER | Rule #11: Male and female brains are different.
EXPLORATION | Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.

Another gut punch [30 Mar 2009|10:48am]
This PostSecret, followed by this email message:

my mom died when i was 14. i always imagine that she really decided to
become a secret agent and fake her death to start a new identity.

sometimes i stand outside my front door planting things so that in the
event she's spying on me, she'll know i love to garden now just like
her. and i'm finally wearing my hair curly, like it is naturally.

had me in tears at my desk.

I wish irrational + irrational = sense. But double negatives don't seem to work in this context.

SWM [28 Mar 2009|02:40pm]
I love this Wanted ad in the Men Looking for Women section:

Alkmaar, man 50 yrs, university education, welfare, sensitive, lazy, dry humour, enjoys sitting at home with literature, films and TV comedies, hardly ever does anything (no travel either) except for sometimes taking short walks looking for non-hysterical, lazy woman with a sense of humour who enjoys this. No pets, religion, children, DIY, sports or email wanted.

This guy sounds like a real catch.

White House <3 Google [25 Mar 2009|10:59am]
According to TechCrunch, the White House is using Google Moderator, hosted on its AppEngine platform, for tomorrow's online town hall meeting and YouTube for the President's video message.

Says TechCrunch: "I’m surprised he’s not wearing a Google tshirt, too. Google should be paying him an endorsement fee for all this promotion." Cute.

This made me laugh [24 Mar 2009|12:29pm]
From BoingBoing:

Here's a refreshingly honest IM session between a 419 scammer and a
savvy mark who's wise the game (This may be fake, don't care, still
funny):

Mr Robert Dutu: Am Robert Dutu. I have very important business proposition for your consideration. Can we chat on it?
Mike Nash: Let me guess? You have millions of dollars you want to give me. But I won't get it. Instead, you will rip me off with advanced fee fraud.
MRD: You are right.
MN: Well, appreciate the honest.
MRD: You are welcome. Pleasure chatting with you.
MN: Good luck in finding an idiot.
MRD: Thanks man

Killing brain time [20 Mar 2009|04:29pm]
My mental screen saver today has been compiling a list of criteria for what I consider to be A Real Man. On the list so far:

* Good driver and paralel parker (stick, natch)
* Plays a decent game of pool
* Has calluses on his hands
* Can tie more than three knots
* Knows the difference between a geiser and a boiler (this may be a Dutch thing)
* Can tie a tie in more than two ways and knows what the knots are called
* Can hold his liquor
* Drinks coffee
* Is comfortable showing affection to another male
* Knows what to look for when buying a suit
* Can fix things
* Understands the offside rule
* Pees standing up
* Drinks beer
* Eats meat
* Is older than me
* Has to shave at least every other day, but preferably every day
* Opens his mail
* Pays his taxes
* Speeds, but doesn't complain if he gets a ticket
* Is good at his job and enjoys doing it

And one I've gone back and forth on over the years is 'Makes more than I do'. In case you're wondering: 90% of these are straight copy/paste from my father.

EDIT: this has become somewhat of a running project. I didn't come up with these in one afternoon, in case you wondered.

Hai! [20 Mar 2009|02:36pm]
The economy is going to shit, but I've never done as many new business and networking meetings in my life. I'm running through business cards like they're going out of style.
